IBT turns into a 30# test line fishing tournament

Greater emphasis on conservation and preservation of billfish

May 7, 2015

Fishing during the best moon of the season, trendy parties and the best gastronomy sets the stage for this year’s IBT, which turns into a 30 lb. test line tournament to keep pushing the bar higher in conservation efforts and provide anglers with new and exciting challenges.

The International Billfish Tournament (IBT) of Club Náutico de San Juan will be held Sept. 24-30 during the peak of the marlin season in the Northern Trench of Puerto Rico, outstanding scenario for the best and easy accessible deep sea fishing in the Americas.

“We are hoping to increase the international angler participation with a change to 30 lbs. test line,” says Ricky Jaén, Chairman of the 62nd edition. “Boats will still be allowed to fish with the same group of anglers throughout the tournament (IGFTO observers alternative), and we will be keep innovating to offer the best tournament.”

The natural beauty of Puerto Rico will serve as highlight with El Yunque Rainforest, Luquillo beach and Culebra island in the spotlight, says Jaén who keeps evaluating new ideas regarding these unique places in Puerto Rico which are cultural and tourist spots from Puerto Rico to the world.

Visiting anglers do not have to charter a boat. They can fish on board the best fishing yachts with the unique IBT’s “rotating” system that allows them to fish and compete on a different boat every day. Anyhow, those willing to fish on board a charter boat, may opt for this alternative.

The tournament is an all-inclusive, four fishing days competition with the best attention towards guests, true camaraderie among anglers, and participants are invited to bring their “significant other” to mingle and enjoy with the Ladies Committee.

You may find full results, exciting videos and photos in the website www.sanjuaninternational.com, a Facebook page (IBT San Juan) and Twitter feed (IBTSJ).

Additionally, the IBT has a mobile application that updates instantly with the most recent bites, boats, scores and results, and other capabilities.

IGFTO stands for International Game Fish Tournament Observers, Inc., and is an organization that provides certified and insured observers to authenticate releases of billfish during international fishing tournaments.

The IBT is the longest consecutively held big game fishing tournament in the world and you are invited! For registration send an e-mail to chairman@sanjuaninternational.com or call Club Náutico de San Juan at 1- 787-722-0177, ext. 226.
